Jony ive house5/1/2023 ![]() ![]() Managing the much larger human interface team was a lot more work than collaborating with the much smaller industrial design team, and traveling back and forth from Pacifica to Cupertino each day had become increasingly frustrating given the increased demands on his time. When the Watch finally shipped, something had to change. That included iOS 7, which was a complete redesign turned around in 9 months, less time than most incremental updates, but also on Apple Watch, an all-new product that Jony threw himself into to the point of mental and physical exhaustion. So, long story short, Scott ended up leaving and Jony ended up taking over design responsibility for software as well. When Steve passed away, Jony couldn't work with Scott Forstall. Steve Jobs used to work with Jony Ive on industrial design and Scott Forstall on iOS software, which included Greg Christie's human interface team. They had been summoned some 50 miles from the company's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters to demonstrate planned features of the product to Jony Ive, Apple's design chief, who seldom came to the office anymore from his San Francisco home. ![]() Sometimes they're held nearby in South Bay. They're meant to get teams together, outside the distractions of the main offices, to focus on specific projects - everything from brainstorming ideas to setting deliverables to presenting to executives. Nilay Patel from the Verge has said he thinks every word of the piece is true and well reported, even if he doesn't think change is bad. The new campus will be completely designed by Ive, from building to items like desks and chairs. For their part, Apple hasn't elaborated any further. Ive plans to utilize the freed up time designing Apple’s retail stores and a new campus. “As Chief Design Officer, Jony will remain responsible for all of our design, focusing entirely on current design projects, new ideas and future initiatives.” “Jony is one of the most talented and accomplished designers of his generation, with an astonishing 5000 design and utility patents to his name,” Cook notes on the memo. Ive will be handing the managerial responsibilities to two on July 1. Both Howarth and Dye are longtime Apple employees, and in their new role, they will be reporting to Ive. Dye has contributed to both iOS 7’s redesign and interface for Apple Watch. UI designer Alan Dye will spearhead the user interface division. He was part of the team which designed the first iPhone. On a memo sent by Apple CEO Tim Cook to employees, Cook noted that hardware designer Richard Howarth will head industrial design division at the company. Instead, Ive makes a video footage explaining the new design language, an agreement both Ive and Cook have cherished for years. Even at new product launches, Ive hardly ever attends events to discuss the new iPhone, iPad or iOS, as learned from Ive’s profile by Ian Parker for the New Yorker earlier this year. Over the years, we’ve learned that Ive isn’t much of a public speaker. But what does it mean for the company? Ive is still in charge of the company’s industrial design and user interface divisions, but he won’t have to worry so much about administrative and management work, which is unarguably best for both him and the company. ![]()
